The International Law of the Sea Summer Academy, which started its activities under the aegis of Kadir Has University, in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide education in fundamental areas of the Law of the Sea, by bringing together judges from international tribunals, academics and practitioners specialized in International Law. It also aims to promote consciousness and knowledge regarding current issues related to the Law of the Sea through the provision of lectures on specific topics, alongside lectures related to fundamental topics.

Recent developments in the Law of the Sea reveal that the lines between Maritime Law and the Law of the Sea are gradually disappearing. As a result, the Program strives to determine the common threads of both disciplines and underline the areas of common developments.

The central theme of this year is “Peaceful Uses and Protection of the Seas“. The first week of the two-week course will focus on maritime areas. In this context, classes will cover the legal regime of internal waters, port and port state control, territorial waters, continental shelf and exclusive economic zone, the seabed area as a common heritage of the mankind, fisheries, high seas, piracy, limitation of the maritime zones and legal regime of the landlocked countries. In the second week, lectures will be delivered on the protection of the marine environment and biodiversity, IMO sulfur emission regulations with effect from January 1, 2020, The Barcelona convention, dispute resolution process in the Law of the Sea and the jurisprudence of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

All courses are in English.
